Litmus Privacy Policy
Last updated: 23 March 2026
Summary
Litmus does not collect, store, or transmit any personal data. Everything stays on your device.
Data We Do Not Collect
- No accounts or authentication
- No analytics or tracking
- No advertising identifiers
- No location data
- No device fingerprinting
- No data shared with third parties
Data Stored On Your Device
- Papers — titles, authors, abstracts, and scores fetched from public preprint APIs
- Preferences — selected fields, sources, quality threshold, appearance, notification settings, content filters (stored in UserDefaults and SwiftData)
- Library — saved papers, reading lists, reading history
- AI Summaries — generated on-device using Apple Intelligence, never sent to any server
All data is stored locally using Apple's SwiftData framework and UserDefaults. No data leaves your device.
Network Requests
Litmus makes network requests to:
- Preprint APIs (arXiv, bioRxiv, medRxiv, ChemRxiv, SSRN, OSF, EarthArXiv, Research Square) — to fetch paper metadata
- Semantic Scholar API — to look up author publication metrics (h-index, paper count, citations, retraction status)
- Crossref API — to verify DOIs exist (phantom reference checking)
These requests contain only paper metadata (DOIs, author names) — never your personal information, reading habits, or device identifiers.
AI Processing
AI summaries use Apple Intelligence (Foundation Models) running entirely on-device. No text is sent to any server, including Apple's.
In-App Purchases
Litmus Pro is a one-time purchase processed by Apple. We do not receive or store any payment information.
Children's Privacy
Litmus does not collect data from anyone, including children under 13.
Changes
If this policy changes, we will update this page with a new date. Since we collect no data, changes are unlikely.
