Academic preprint quality scoring

Getting Started

Open Litmus and your feed will populate with recent preprints from your selected sources and fields. Tap any paper to read its abstract, then tap "Score this paper" for a quality assessment across six dimensions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are scores calculated?

Litmus analyses abstract text using keyword detection, pattern matching, and readability metrics. Author data comes from Semantic Scholar's public API. Integrity flags use a local dictionary of 290+ known tortured phrases and Crossref DOI verification. All processing runs on your device.

Why is a paper scored low?

Low scores typically indicate missing methodology details, lack of transparency signals, or integrity concerns detected in the abstract. Tap the score for a dimension-by-dimension breakdown showing exactly what was and wasn't detected.

What are integrity alerts?

Integrity alerts flag potential issues like tortured phrases (synonym-substituted terms common in paper mills), phantom references (DOIs that don't exist in Crossref), suspicious email domains, and boilerplate acknowledgement text.

What's free?

The free tier includes all 8 preprint sources, 5 Litmus Scores per day, full integrity alerts, a 25-paper library, and APA citation copy. No account required.

What does Pro add?

Litmus Pro is a one-time purchase (no subscription) that unlocks unlimited scores, unlimited library, AI summaries, author credibility profiles, full citation export (BibTeX, RIS, MLA, Chicago), offline reading, field notifications, and text-to-speech.

Does Litmus use AI?

AI summaries use Apple Intelligence running entirely on-device. They require iPhone 16 or iPad with M-series chip. The feature is optional — Litmus works fully without it.
